Cure For Arthritis
What's HOT (The Times of India) 25-Aug-2006

Heard of the latest cure for arthritis? It comes from green-lipped mussels

Arthritis today drives millions of sufferers to their physicians each year seeking relief from the pain, immobility, and deformity it can cause. In India, according to reports, In India according to reports, arthritis has reached an epidemic level with as many as 100 million people, who comprise about 10 percent of the country’s population suffering from this crippling disease.

Current guidelines in many countries recommend non-steroid ant-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) commonly known as painkillers for treating patients with arthritis. For decades, patients have used inexpensive painkillers. But these drugs cause bleeding in the stomach/intestines n some users and have other serious adverse effects from long-term use.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 1947, New Zealanders gathered 250 tonnes of GLM, but once anecdotal evidence of its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties grew, sales rocketed, In 2005, the GLM harvest weighed at 85,000 tonnes making its turnover larger than the New Zealand wine industry. Today , the GLM is cultibated on marine farms which are strictly controlled by the New Zealand government to ensure purity and quality.
Nevertheless, due to high level of uncertainty and high-cost involved un most of treatment options available, it is quite common to see arthritis sufferers-tired of running pillar to post from one treatment to other often give-up and resort to a life-long dependence on painkillers knowing that in the long-run, this relief may come at a very high price.

But there is still hope. For the solution might be found in the ocean. Yes! As new scientific research uncovers the mysteries of the seas, the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel (GLM), an edible shellfish found off the coast of New Zealand seems to contain the therapeutic agents needed to treat one of the most debilitating diseases of our time. This revolutionary therapy has already benefited millions of users around the world and is now available in India under the brand name seatone.

Dr. John Croft, a senior marine scientist who authored Health from the seas- freedom from Disease says: “GLM holds the key to overs coming arthritis and other auto-immune inflammatory conditions. GLM contains anti-inflammatory agents, immune modulators and many essential building blocks-proteins, minerals, glycosaminoglycans and marine long chain fatty acids-all naturally occurring-

-substantial therapeutic agents known to maintain joint mobility and well being and needed to rebuild collagen, proteoglycans and synovial fluid found in the joints, ligaments and tendons.”

According to Dr. Croft, “This edible shellfish has been a major part of the diet of the local population and it was in 1947 that an American research programme studying marine molluscs for anti-cancer properties, found the GLM to be a potential natural remedy for arthritis. It actually contains the components that the body requires to effectively relieve the symptoms of arthritic diseases without inducing the classical adverse side effects associated with many drug therapies including pain killers. GLM has now been subjected to more than 30 years of quality scientific research and proven in laboratory and clinical trials, to be effective in treating both rheumatoid and osteo forms of arthritis.”

“GLM Contains the components that the body requires to effectively relieve the symptoms of arthritic diseases without any adverse side effects,” (Dr John Croft)
The benefit comes as relief from pain and improvement in general mobility. Usually, the improvement in these conditions is gradual and progressive; it is also usually long lasting and not temporary. Normally the first thing to be noticed is a reduction in pain, which is then followed by gradual improvement in grip strength, freedom of movement or other mobility.

Since its discovery, Healtheries, a multinational healthcare company based in New Zealand has launched GLM extracts under the brand name seatone. Seatone is currently sold in over 30 countries and is available in India through its authorised representative Peram Healthcare. According to Ms Malini jain of Perma Healthcare, “The cost of this therapy of 1000mg/day comes to Rs 50 per day for the first three months which could be reduced to 500mg/day (Rs 25 per day).” So stay healthy with nature without fear of side effects.
